My approach to teaching guitar is centered on helping students develop complete musicianship. While learning pieces is an important goal and a necessary part of the process, it is only one part of what transforms a guitarist into a musician. I focus on helping students understand how music works. Together we develop the fundamentals of rhythm, technique, and tone while also building a strong foundation in music theory. Students learn the underlying principles of harmony and counterpoint, deepening both their expressive ability on the instrument and their enjoyment of the music they encounter in everyday life.
I also place a strong emphasis on teaching students how to practice effectively. As lessons progress, students learn practical strategies they can take home and apply to their repertoire. Musical and technical challenges become much more manageable when complex skills are broken into smaller, clear steps. Through this process, students develop stronger listening skills and build practice habits that consistently produce more beautiful music with less physical tension.
Above all, I want lessons to be clear, structured, and enjoyable. By building strong fundamentals and engaging in thoughtful musical exploration, students develop the skills needed for a lifelong relationship with music—whether they pursue the guitar seriously or simply play for their own enjoyment.
